Australia's government agency charged with classifying movies and video games, the equivalent of the American MPAA, was hacked today with an amusing message posted on the agency's home page.
The strike likely comes in response to the Australian government initiative to legislatively and technologically implement a filtered ISP solution across the nation in effort to protect citizens, especially children, from illegal and harmful Internet content.
The issue of censorship vs. damaging content has waged ever since the Internet became a prolific medium for spreading controversial content. Other countries, particularly underdeveloped and third-world countries, have been so concerned about issues related to the exposure of indecent material to children, have been reluctant to invest in Internet- and computer-related infrastructure. With Australia determined to put its money where its mouth is, the high-investment ISP approach to child protection should have better results than the government-created home filtering system that turned out to be easily circumventable.
